Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Wednesday evening following an eight-game winning streak.
The Magpies had to work harder than expected at the weekend after falling behind early to League Two Bromley in the third round of the FA Cup. Lewis Miley’s crisp equalizer calmed Geordie’s nerves before they pulled away in the second half.
Sunday’s win came after a 2-0 away win over Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final – a triumph that added to five straight wins in the Premier League. Their remarkable upturn in form has given them legitimate hopes of a return to the Champions League.
Wolves’ goals are not quite as lucrative in the second half of the season, with survival in the Premier League their main goal.
They also reached the fourth round of the FA Cup after Vitor Pereira named a strong starting XI at Bristol City. Pereira has quickly made Wolves a much more watchable team, but last week they were beaten by Nottingham Forest for the first time under his guidance.
Their position towards the drop zone remains precarious as Ipswich’s recent performance sees them level on points with the West Midlanders.

Alexander Isak was ruled out at the weekend with a hamstring injury, but Eddie Howe is hoping his superstar striker will be fit for the visit of Wolves.
Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock are all injured but the trio are not expected to miss Wednesday’s game.
Anthony Gordon was substituted for the second half against Bromley while Harvey Barnes succumbed to a muscle injury and the former Leicester winger is expected to be sidelined for a period of time. Barnes sits on the treatment table alongside Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth and Nick Pope.
Predicted Newcastle vs Wolves line-up (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isaac, Gordon.
The Wolves are receiving reinforcements with the return of star striker Matheus Cunha, who served the second of his two-game ban at Ashton Gate. The Brazilian will return to Pereira’s team and will work alongside outstanding striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
There could be a Premier League debut for January arrival Emmanuel Agbadou at the heart of Wolves’ defence, but he will not be joined by Craig Dawson or Toti Gomes, both of whom are out injured.
Nelson Semedo is also likely to miss out with a hamstring injury, while Sasa Kalajdzic, Boubacar Traore, Enso Gonzalez and Yerson Mosquera are all out with long-term knee problems.
Expected Wolves line-up against Newcastle (3-4-2-1): Sat; Doherty, Agbadou, Bueno; R. Gomes, Andre, J. Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Cunha, Hwang; Larsen
Cunha’s return is a big boost for the visitors, who missed his ability in front of goal against Forest last Monday. Under Pereira, Wolves have become a fearless side and it is unlikely that they will arrive at St James’ Park with the intention of picking up a point.
However, the enterprising Wolves will be welcomed by the hosts, who are currently scoring for fun. If given space to run, Howe’s wonderful front three will take advantage. Their midfield continues to perform at an incredibly high level and Newcastle’s defense is reaching a level comparable to their brilliance in the 2022/23 season.
This has the makings of a back-and-forth, high-scoring contest and the Magpies should continue their excellent run.
