Player ratings as Magpies reach Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United reached the final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening when she defeated Arsenal in the second leg of her semi -finals in St. James’ Park with 2-0.

The hosts aimed to protect their two-goal advantage from the first leg and believed that they had added after only four minutes. Alexander Isak converted Anthony Gordon’s direct passport with style, but the Sweden clinical strike was excluded for the offside.

Martin Odegaard fired close to the Arsenal in the 18th minute, but could only find the outside of the post with his efforts. The waste of the Norwegian was punished almost immediately when Jacob Murphy converted up close at the other after Isak had hit the woodwork.

Anthony Gordon secured Newcastle’s place in the showpiece event seven minutes after the restart when he used David Raya from a horror pass to give the magpies an advantage of four goals.

Arsenal pushed half -heartedly into a consolation, but failed to destroy Newcastles stubborn re -hat, who held firmly when the magpies took a big step towards their first large domestic strophy since 1955.

Newcastle meets the winner of the draw on Thursday between Tottenham and Liverpool, with Spurs currently going out of our first leg 1-0. Eddie Howe’s team will also look forward to the showpiece on Sunday, March 16.
