Player ratings as Raphinha stars in Clasico thumping

Barcelona lifted their first trophy of the season on Sunday evening, beating their fiercest rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in the Supercopa de Espana final.

A barely believable first half was marred by violent breakaways on both sides. Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé broke the stalemate with a magnificent individual goal after just five minutes. But when Alejandro Balde completed an advance in the last of ten added minutes of the first half, Barcelona led 4-1.

Lamine Yamal’s precise shot into the far corner canceled out Mbappe’s early lead after 22 minutes. Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona the lead with a penalty in the 36th minute, just before Raphinha gave the Catalans a 3-1 lead with a header.

The Brazilian needed just three minutes in the second half to secure Barcelona’s fifth part of the night. Raphinha burst in behind Madrid’s newly formed defensive line and had already beaten Aurelien Tchouameni, but found time for fun to hack past the makeshift centre-back before picking the bottom corner.

As has been proven so many times, Madrid would not be gentle on this good evening. Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off just before the hour for an inappropriate lunge on Mbappé. After this free kick, Rodrygo hit the top corner and reduced the deficit to 2:5.

Barcelona’s 10 players maintained their lead and claimed their first title of Hansi Flick’s reign, while Madrid were left licking their wounds.
