Player ratings as Son double puts Spurs on brink of Europa League last 16

Tottenham Hotspur have one foot in the automatic round of 16 of the Europa League after their matchday seven victory over Hoffenheim in Germany on Thursday evening.

Spurs took the lead in the opening minutes, Pedro Porro sending a long pass across the goal line into the path of James Maddison to take control of the ball and ensure a dream start.

The second goal of the evening, scored by Son Heung-min, was a bit lucky. Maddison’s deflected pass put the Spurs captain in goal and his deflected shot flew over Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Brandon Austin made an excellent save and made it 2-0 in the first half before Hoffenheim went on the attack after the break. The hosts hit the crossbar through former Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric before VAR intervened and overturned a penalty awarded against Austin.

Hoffenheim then managed to equalize through Anton Stach, but Son gave Spurs some breathing space again just over ten minutes before the end of the game with an overtaking maneuver and a low shot over the goal from the left. And that proved crucial when substitute David Mokwa reduced the deficit again in the final stages.
