Memphis Depay engraved his name into Dutch football history last week and overtook Robin van Persie to become the leading goal scorer of the Netherlands with his 51st and 52nd goals.
To mark the milestone, Puma has teamed up with the striker to create the MD51 Ultra-a limited design, which tells the story of his trip both on and outside the field.
The boots are based on a white base and contain contrasting colors: one in blue and black to reflect family, faith and culture, others in orange and black to capture its football triumph. The details include his famous lion tattoo, number 10, the homage to his Ghanaian roots and an allusion to his mother Cora.
But the fans will not be able to copy them. There are only 51 couples who each go directly to the people who have shaped his life – from family to mentors and close friends.
“I was a little boy with big dreams; a young animal became a lion on the largest stage,” said Depay. “The top scorer of becoming the Netherlands is a real honor … I wanted to celebrate by giving the people who helped me a special sign of my appreciation.”
For Depay, it’s less about Hype drops and more about a personal thank you. And for everyone else? Another memory that the man with the lion on his chest is now roaring the loudest in the Dutch football history.
