Ruben Amorim explains surprise Alejandro Garnacho inclusion as Marcus Rashford dropped for Man Utd FA Cup tie

Ruben Amorim revealed Alejandro Garnacho’s surprise inclusion in Manchester United’s starting XI for their FA Cup tie against Arsenal was the result of his impressive performances in training despite a hectic schedule transfer Speculation surrounding the player.

Marcus Rashford, another United striker who has been the focus of endless rumors, was not included in the squad.

Garnacho, along with Rashford, was not used for the Manchester derby last month. Unlike his teammate, the Argentine striker has fought his way back into Amorim’s plans but has been repeatedly linked with a move – although mainly as a substitute.

Amad Diallo has been the first choice in United’s front three in recent weeks, often playing alongside Bruno Fernandes behind Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee. However, the winger, who had just signed a new long-term contract, was only fit enough to sit on the bench ahead of United’s third round game against Arsenal. Garnacho and not Rashford were awarded the contract.

“Amad [Diallo] “I had a little problem during the week and I like the way Garnacho is playing – he is playing well,” said Amorim BBC before the game. “The way he is training, we felt it was a good opportunity to see Garnacho in the starting lineup.”

Earlier in the weekend, Amorim confirmed that Rashford was back in training and available after missing last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool due to illness. However, the 27-year-old was again missing from the matchday squad.

It was telling that Amorim cited Garnacho’s performance in training and his general attitude as an explanation for his inclusion. Rashford’s extended absence is reportedly a result of his off-field activity and disappointing performances at Carrington.

Turning his attention from selection to play, Amorim added: “We focus on being competitive in the little things and in the set pieces it is difficult to beat this team in that regard.”

“We have to be more aggressive in the final third. We have a great history in this competition and we want to win.”
