Sergio Aguero, legend of Manchester City, admitted that he wanted to stay in the club beyond his departure from 2021, and even ready to play a different role within the squad.
Aguero was City’s top goal scorer ever and approached his 33rd birthday when his contract went. But the club no longer got for their money, whereby the remarkably consistent Argentina fell to 23/20 due to injury problems.
Pep Guardiola was increasingly able to rely on Aguero in 2020/21, and the club decided not to extend its contract and ended an era defining magic after ten years.
“I had the contract until 2021 and Manchester City, five or six months earlier, told me that they would not renew me. So I started looking for a club, and so it was” Manchester Evening News.
“Obviously I wanted to go on, because for me City was my home. Maybe I wanted a year, especially because I was ready to be on the bench if necessary.
“Last year I had already played with PEP occasionally, so I was ready to help from another side because I had the feeling that it would serve for the World Cup to stay in the Premier League for a year, even from the bank and a little one that I played physically.
“But you have to understand that the club also needed changes. It was a decision by the club and I think it was also very right because they also needed a replacement and maybe stayed there in the city so as not to be the right thing as a replacement for the club. So the best thing was to look for a club and so it was obviously very good.”
Aguero came to Barcelona as Free Agent and signed a two -year contract by 2023. However, he did not make it to the World Cup 2022, which Argentina won, and suddenly retired after diagnosing only five games in his time with his new club.
