A Spanish government spokesman had denied claims that Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo had been granted temporary registration.
Olmo, along with midfielder Pau Victor, watched his La Liga registration expire on December 31, violating La Liga’s rule that players are not granted a second license with a club in a single season can.
As possible options began to disappear, Barcelona took their case to the Spanish government and the Higher Sports Council (CSD), and on Tuesday reports emerged that they had been granted permission to temporarily re-register Olmo and Victor while their case is negotiated.
However, government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria has now denied granting temporary registrations and insisted that the CSD has not yet made a decision.
“We’re studying it,” Alegria said RNE. “In fact, I’ve already seen some news, some information that it was considered a done deal. And the truth is that we are currently still examining the request that was sent to us via FC Barcelona.”
“Because, in addition, we need to receive objections from both La Liga and the RFEF in order to be able to give an answer. We also have a deadline, we are talking about a 52-page request, which also had more than 60 documents attached, so it is not tedious work at all.
“Of course we will respond as quickly as possible.”
Barcelona are hoping that Olmo and Victor will receive temporary registrations that would allow them to play in La Liga while the CSD considers their case.
Should such approval be granted, Barcelona would still have to manage to win the case in court to keep Olmo and Victor registered for the remainder of the season, with any temporary registrations easily revoked if Barcelona are unsuccessful.
