Armstrong leaves Southampton after helping them return to the promised land of the Premier League.

The 32-year-old helped the Saints regain promotion to the Premier League this season, but missed the end of the season and the club’s play-off victory in the Championship due to injury.

However, his contract was not renewed, according to the list of players still in Southampton’s squad published on Tuesday.

Armstrong is part of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the opening game of the 2024 European Championship against Germany in nine days and the player hopes to be fit in time to play.

The former Celtic star has no shortage of suitors and should a move to Fiorentina materialise, he would follow a similar path to Lewis Ferguson, who currently plays for Bologna.

Fulham pose a threat to Fiorentina’s plans to lure Armstrong to Italy as Marco Silva looks to strengthen his options in midfield.

Armstrong joined St. Mary’s from Celtic in 2018 and made 214 appearances for the south coast club.

During his six years with the club, he scored 25 goals and was a key player in the 2023/24 season, making 45 appearances.

His release statement said: “The club would like to thank Stuart for his commitment and dedication during his time as a Saint and we wish him the very best in whatever comes next.”
