Thousands of Bayern Munich fans sign petition to stop ‘horrible’ Manchester United transfer

Fans of FC Bayern Munich have started a petition to prevent the sale of Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United.

The Red Devils want to rebuild their defense after the departure of Raphael Varane and the possible departure of Harry Maguire and see De Ligt as a good option.

Earlier this week, The Pitch Prospect reported that the Bundesliga star had told his club that he was ready to take on a new challenge.

A transfer to Old Trafford would mean a reunion with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who remains a great admirer of his ex-captain.

However, Bayern fans were not impressed by the reports about his possible transfer – so much so that they started a petition to prevent the transfer.

At the time of writing, over 14,000 people had already signed.

The description of the petition reads: “We all want Matthijs de Ligt to stay at Bayern Munich! He has proven that he is a world-class defender, probably the best in our squad.”

“There is a reason why he was voted our best player of the 2022/23 season. Furthermore, he is only 24 years old and has a promising future ahead of him, which he will use to fulfill his enormous potential.

“Despite his young age, Mattha is already very mature and has a great mentality that will definitely make him a leader in defense and probably a contender for the captain’s armband in a few years.

“His ability to speak fluent English, German and Dutch will help him a lot. At the age of 19, he captained Ajax Amsterdam to the semi-finals of the UCL.

“Selling Matthijs de Ligt would be an absolutely terrible decision and we would definitely regret it. That’s why we are using our voices to make it clear that we will NOT make that mistake!”

The 24-year-old has made 73 appearances for Bayern since joining the club from Juventus for £68 million in 2022.

During this time he also scored five goals and provided two assists.

De Ligt made his breakthrough at Ajax in 2016 at the age of 17 and is currently taking part in the 2024 European Championship in Germany with the Netherlands.
