Tottenham broke club-record to sign Ukraine international who ignored Arsenal star’s advice

Tottenham will have Sergei Rebrov that he has not warned his Ukrainian compatriot Illia Zabarnyi in his footsteps.

After a miserable spell in the club around the turn of the century, Rebrov could have given bitterness towards Spurs to the club.

The 51-year-old arrived in North London with the same high day, which his Ukrainian colleague Zabarnyi now has in Bournemouth.

Rebrovs £ 11 -Million -Change of Dynamo Kyiv in 2000 was supposed to represent a new era for Spurs in the new millennium.

Tottenham’s former record fee of 6 million GBP, which had been issued for Les Ferdinand three years earlier, destroyed his transmission.

Lord Alan Sugar spent only £ 23rd in the 28 months from January 1998 to Rebrov’s move in May 2000 for new players.

The 75-cap striker was one of the hottest real estate in Europe because it had aroused serious interest of arsenal and rangers.

After signing a five -year contract, however, Rebrov said about Tottenham: “You managed to find a common language with me.

“I look forward to playing in England. I like it better than Italian football, although I can’t explain why.

“But in a club like Tottenham there is a trainer (Boss George Graham) who makes the strikers run the ball and get the ball. I’m used to it. I played that way all the time.

“We (my wife and I) were ready to go to Glasgow to look around, but there was a problem with the transfer and we could not complete the deal.

“Arsenal has not made a deal because they play in the UEFA Cup and all their transmission guidelines are decided after the cup final.”

Together with striker partner Andriy Shevchenko, Rebrov had contributed to establishing Dynamo Kyiv as a strong force in European football.

While the latter found a perfect home in Milan, many thought that Tottenham was not the right club for Rebrov.

Including his Ukrainian colleague Oleg Luzhny in Arsenal, who said he should “join a larger and better club”.

The BBC World Service interviewed Fidel Pavlenko, the Ukrainian journalist Fidel Pavlenko, who said: “In Ukraine, most people believe that Rebrov is a better goal scorer than Shevchenko.

“He has more goals for Kyiv, more goals for the Ukrainian national team and more goals in the Champions League than Shevchenko.”

“To be honest, it’s a step down,” added Pavlenko. “Back in Ukraine, people believe that he deserves something bigger. He has been involved in European football in the past seven or eight years and has now landed at Spurs.”

Rebrov ignored all the advice to achieve a deal of £ 25,000 a week, but four years later claimed that the move was not his decision.

“In Ukraine it is a completely different situation than in England. You have no choice – the club’s chairman has a choice,” he told The Guardian.

“Arsenal made some offers, but Tottenham gave more, and the chairman of Kiev decided on Tottenham. That’s why I came.”

Rebrov experienced a slow start to life in England and achieved nine times in so many appearances (29) that Shevchenko scored goals in his debut series -a season.

Less than 12 months after his arrival, Daniel Levy, the managing director of ENIC, who bought Sugar Spurs, took over the club.

One of his first acts was to emulate the apprentice star by firing managers Graham and replacing him with Glenn Hoddle.

The first team chances for Rebrov dried, and even an 18-month loan magic with Fenerbahce could not repair its damaged reputation.

He only scored four goals in 38 appearances for the Turkish Giants and was shipped in the championship in West Ham in 2004.

Rebrov finished his white Hart Lane after he had just managed to meet double -digit figures on his 60 excursions for Tottenham.

Nevertheless, Rebrov has publicly stated that he did not regret his decision to leave his home country behind and to join the LilyWhites.

“I didn’t wish I had never joined Spurs,” said Rebrov according to Evening Standard, “I have a lot of friends there and the club is not a problem for me.

“I just didn’t have a good relationship with the chairman Daniel Levy, that’s all.”

Levy hopes that Zabarnyi will never read this last part after he has thrown his hat into the ring for the signature of the central defender.

Spurs are ready to keep up the European champion Paris Saint-Germain for the signature of the central defender this summer.

However, Bournemouth is not under the pressure to sell the Ukrainian and would require a significant fee.

Last month, Talksport reported that they rejected a bid by PSG for the 22-year-old £ 55 million.

At a time of the district, Rebrov is now the Ukrainian manager who is responsible for Zabarnyi for the national side of the country.

But it is unlikely that Levy will ask to give a good word for him …
