Tottenham told they could be title contenders with one signing this summer

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Tottenham could be title contenders with Ivan Toney up front.

Brentford striker Toney’s contract expires next summer and several Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the England international.

Ivan Toney has his sights set on a move this summer after being repeatedly linked with the Premier League big boys.

However, The Pitch Prospect believe he could let his current contract expire and leave for free next summer, with Saudi clubs also interested.

It is believed that MacAnthony included a 30 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that saw Toney join Brentford – and Peterborough would be in for a huge windfall if the Bees sell this summer.

The Posh boss believes the 28-year-old would be a perfect fit for Spurs.

MacAnthony told The Pitch Prospect: “The way Ange [Postecoglou] Plays… If you could get rid of Richarlison, a striker with just one goal in five games, and put Toney on an Ange team, I think they would have finished comfortably in the top three last year.

“It’s not about resale, that’s what people always accuse me of. I’ve said that before. I think Toney would have won Arsenal the title last year.”

“I think he makes Chelsea a completely different team, with all these young players and a figurehead, a top international player with the number 9 in attack.”

“And I think he puts the Ange team in the top three and could challenge for the title in the last month of the season.”

Spurs are still looking for a new striker following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last summer.

Last season, Postecoglou’s men had to share the goals, with captain Heung-min Son the north Londoners’ top scorer with 17 league goals.

An out-of-form Richarlison contributed 12 points, while Dejan Kulusevski scored eight times.

It was enough for Spurs to secure a place in the Europa League, but Postecoglou will be expected to step up his game next season in the race for Champions League qualification and in a bid to win one of the elusive trophies for the first time since 2008.

Toney has indicated he is ready for a new challenge and his successes with England this summer have further whetted his appetite for more games at the highest level.

The Brentford striker is yet to test his mettle in Europe and with just 12 months left on his current contract, the Bees may be forced to cash in on their striker to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
