Tottenham vs Newcastle: Preview, predictions and lineups

Newcastle United want to inflict even more misery on struggling Tottenham Hotspur when they visit north London on Saturday.

Spurs are winless in three games and the pressure is mounting on Ange Postecoglou as he suffers a setback in his second season. The Lilywhites are currently in the bottom half of the table and defensive injuries continue to hamper their chances of turning their fortunes around.

Things are looking comparatively rosy for Eddie Howe at Newcastle, with the Magpies in excellent form despite a shaky start to the season. They have won their last five competitions and are in the hunt for Champions League qualification after moving up to fifth in the table.

Here is 90 minutes Guide to a fascinating clash in the capital.

Tottenham’s extensive injury list is a mitigating factor in their recent performances, with defensive injuries causing huge problems for Postecoglou. Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are missing for Saturday’s game.

Destiny Udogie has joined them in the treatment room after being left out of the recent draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers with a hamstring injury that will keep him out for around six weeks. The good news for Postecoglou is that Djed Spence is available again after his suspension.

Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Mikey Moore are all unavailable in the front row, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended again after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves.

Predicted line-up for Tottenham against Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Forster; Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Bissouma, Sarr; Johnson, Kulusevski, son; Solanke.

Fabian Schar, Simon Hooper

Newcastle are without a number of defenders themselves, with Fabian Schar joining the absentee list after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in the win over Manchester United. Jamaal Lascelles, Nick Pope and Emil Krafth are also missing from the backline.

Sven Botman is close to making his return after a 10-month injury, but Saturday may come too soon for the Dutch defender. Lloyd Kelly is deployed as a midfielder to partner Dan Burn.

Callum Wilson is still a long way from returning after a hamstring injury, meaning the in-form Alexander Isak, who has an excellent record against Spurs, will lead the side.

Predicted line-up for Newcastle vs Tottenham (4-3-3): Dubravka; Book, Kelly, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isaac, Gordon.

Newcastle have had an impressive record against Spurs recently, winning four of their last five meetings. They have enjoyed convincing 6-1 and 4-0 home wins and also beat Tottenham away in 2022/23. Their impressive form and increasing consistency probably make them favorites against their injury-plagued hosts.

Tottenham’s problems this season have clearly been in defense and they are unlikely to see any dramatic improvement against Newcastle. Players like Isak, Anthony Gordon and the in-form Jacob Murphy are prepared to punish a much-changed defence.

Spurs are always a dangerous team themselves and are the division’s second-highest scorers, but their leaky defense could prove costly again this weekend.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle
