Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk’s representatives have reportedly offered the Dutchman’s services to Real Madrid as his contract at Anfield expires.
Now in the final six months of his contract, Van Dijk is one of three high-profile players of major concern to Liverpool as their contracts expire. Mohamed Salah continues to put huge public pressure on the Reds, while right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is Real Madrid’s top target for the summer transfer window.
Accordingly RelevoMadrid were also given the chance to bring in Van Dijk. The 33-year-old’s agents are said to have contacted him to discuss a massive free transfer, knowing Madrid want to strengthen their defense.
It is claimed that Van Dijk was ready to travel to the Santiago Bernabeu when the offer was made, but Madrid officials ultimately rejected the proposal.
Although Madrid were obviously aware of Van Dijk’s quality, Madrid felt that the Netherlands international was too old for their plans and instead preferred to look for a younger central defender who would be able to lead the team in the next decade to lead.
It is unclear exactly when this proposal was made. Van Dijk was publicly asked about a transfer to Madrid when they faced his Liverpool side in November 2024, but quickly brushed off the speculation.
Liverpool are now believed to be growing increasingly confident about their chances of securing Van Dijk’s future with a new contract, but doubts remain over Alexander-Arnold after Madrid attempted to extend their plans with a bid for the Englishman to accelerate in January.
