Virgil van Dijk provides new Liverpool contract update

The captain of Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk, has announced that a decision about his future will be announced “in the coming weeks”.

Van Dijk’s uncertain contractual status was a major topic of conversation throughout the campaign. Similar to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, the Dutch defender is ready to become a free agent in July and still has to put a pen on a new deal.

After it originally looked that Van Dijk was the most likely of the three contract rate to stay with Anfield, the speculation about the 33-year-old’s departure has gained a pace in this calendar year. Saudi Arabia and a lot of interest were spoken of by European clubs.

Van Dijk was in a fruitless offer to remove the rising gossip pile, defiantly vaguely in its future and repeatedly insisted that nothing has yet been decided. Liverpool’s skipper did not change this attitude, but revealed a rough time when this uncertainty was graciously closed.

Speak at A Cadbury’s Event on Thursday, which was captured by a fan, offered van Dijk: “I can’t say more than there will be news in the coming weeks.

“Whether it is positive or not, I have no idea at this time, I don’t know.

“I’ve mentioned it many times, I said I was calm, that has happened many times. I love the club and the club loves me, I love to play for Liverpool. I love to be around the boys every day.

“In this phase I didn’t really panic at all, so see.”

For his part, Liverpool should be “optimistic” that van Dijk – and Salah – will sign new offers before the campaign was concluded. It is unlikely that Alexander-Arnold will remain with his teammates with the numerous reports in Anfield, which were made to be about Real Madrid shortly before joining.
