Cardiff City, Everton and Fulham opened the third round of the FA Cup and all won their games on Thursday evening. The following evening, Aston Villa emerged victorious in an all-Premier League clash, defeating West Ham United in Graham Potter’s first game as Irons manager.
Liverpool, who last won the competition in 2021/22, easily progressed into the fourth round with a 4-0 win over second division side Accrington Stanley. Trent Alexander-Arnold starred at right-back after a difficult week and Federico Chiesa scored his first goal for the club.
Chelsea achieved a similar high-scoring win against their Second Division opponents, defeating Morecambe 5-0 at Stamford Bridge. Doubles from Tosin Adarabioyo and Joao Felix ensured a comfortable win and the Blues are joined in the fourth round by Bournemouth, Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest.
The biggest surprise of Saturday’s FA Cup games was Plymouth Argyle’s 1-0 away win at Brentford. Morgan Whittaker scored the winner in the Pilgrims’ last game before Miron Muslic takes over from the recently sacked Wayne Rooney.
