Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted he was “upset” after Sunday’s draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite it being one of the under-fire side’s best performances this season.
United began the game at Anfield after a poor December, which saw them lose six of ten games across all competitions – including five of seven in the Premier League alone.
Considering Liverpool have set standards at home and in Europe this season, including winning the second leg 3-0 at Old Trafford in September, most expected United’s winning streak to continue.
But Lisandro Martinez gave Ruben Amorim’s team the lead in the second half. And while Liverpool then took a two-goal lead, Amad Diallo equalized and secured the deserved point. It was further proof that United are capable of such performances, having also beaten Manchester City in recent weeks, which in turn caused Fernandes frustration due to their lack of consistency.
“I think it’s a really good result,” said the midfielder Heaven sport.
“We could have even won the game in the end. That is a fair result. I’m upset because if we show that against Liverpool, why can’t we do that every week? I finally put in a decent performance overall. We need a lot more from ourselves to get more out of this season.”
Looking ahead to the performance at Anfield, Fernandes revealed that he was actually more “worried” about facing Southampton in the Premier League than Arsenal in the FA Cup.
“It was there, but it only came in today’s game,” he reflected. “Now we have an FA Cup game against Arsenal, which will be really tough again. We want to be in the final again. I’ll probably be more worried about Southampton after this performance.” [against Liverpool].”
Amorim made similar comments after the final whistle, admitting that seeing United play the way they did at Anfield only made him angrier “because of the other games”.
